I love a good catchy phrase when I need a pick-me-up or a shift in my thinking.
Recovery sayings are encouraging, practical, & can help you refocus quickly!
Let’s check out some of my favorites and their meanings:
One Day At A Time
Encourages focusing on the present and dealing with life’s challenges on a day-to-day basis, rather than getting overwhelmed by the future.
It Works If You Work It
By being consistent and engaging in practices that will better your life, you are more likely to experience positive results and personal growth.
Keep It Simple
Encourages a straightforward and uncomplicated approach to problems, decisions, or tasks. Simplifying things can often lead to better understanding, efficiency, and easier problem-solving. Avoid unnecessary complexity and overthinking.
Nothing Changes, If Nothing Changes
If you don’t make any changes or take action, you can’t expect different outcomes. In order to see progress or improvement, you need to be willing to make changes in your behavior, habits, or approach to a situation. Stagnation is unlikely to lead to any meaningful transformation.
Let Go and Let God
This encourages surrendering control over situations and outcomes to God. It suggests having faith and trusting that things will work out according to God’s plan, rather than trying to control everything on your own.
Everywhere You Go, There You Are
The idea that no matter where you go or what changes you make in your external environment, you still bring yourself and your own perspective with you. It suggests that inner growth, self-awareness, and personal changes are often more impactful than simply changing your surroundings. Your experiences and attitudes are rooted in you, regardless of your physical location.
This Too Shall Pass
It reminds us that both the good and the bad times in life are temporary. No matter how challenging or joyful a situation may be, it will eventually come to an end. So this saying serves as a source of comfort during difficult times and a reminder to cherish the moments of happiness, while also finding strength during hardships.
Progress, Not Perfection
This emphasizes the importance of making gradual improvements and moving forward, rather than striving for flawless outcomes. It encourages focusing on the journey of growth and development, recognizing that small steps and advancements are valuable, even if they’re not flawless. The goal is to keep learning, adapting, and getting better over time, rather than getting discouraged by the pursuit of unattainable perfection.
Easy Does It
Suggest taking things slowly, calmly, and without rushing. It’s often used to advise caution, moderation, or a relaxed approach to a task or situation. The idea is to avoid pushing too hard or overwhelming yourself, and instead, to proceed with a measured and balanced effort.
Secrets Keep You Sick
This implies that keeping secrets can have negative effects on one’s emotional and mental well-being. It suggests that by concealing or hiding important information or experiences, individuals may hinder their own healing and impede their progress towards recovery. Opening up and sharing these secrets can be a crucial step in the journey towards better health and well-being.
To Keep What You Have, You Have To Give It Away
By sharing or giving away things like knowledge, wisdom, love, or support, you often end up strengthening those qualities in yourself and in your life. It can relate to the idea of generosity, kindness, and helping others not only benefitting them but also contributing to your own personal growth, fulfillment, and the preservation of valuable qualities.
First Things First
It’s a reminder to prioritize tasks or activities based on their importance. It encourages focusing on the most crucial or essential task before addressing less important matters. It emphasizes effective time management and decision making by tackling high-priority items before moving on to the others.
Live and Let Live
Encourage respecting people’s individuality and allowing them to live their lives as they see fit, without unnecessary judgment or interference.
Last, but not least, a favorite saying and prayer in recovery:
God Grant Me the Serenity to Accept the Things I Cannot Change, the Courage to Change the Things I Can, and the Wisdom to Know the Difference
Reinhold Neibuhr
This prayer helps you get out of yourself and think about what you actually have control over. It helps you to stop, refocus, and breathe (not just react), helping you weigh decisions and choices before deciding on the next step of action.
I’d love to hear which ones stood out to you in the comments!
